When David Frederick was faced with the reality that he needed a double hip replacement, he told his doctor to give him the strongest implant around. As a materials manager at a prosthetics and orthotics company in Las Vegas, Frederick was familiar with the available technology in the industry. "I like to ride ATVs and dirt bikes in the desert, so my doctor knew I needed something tough," said Frederick. Another reason he needed a long-lasting implant is his age. At 39, Frederick could not believe he needed a double hip replacement. But, thanks to Minimally Invasive Surgery, he didnt have to worry about big scars and long recovery time. In 2002, Frederick was experiencing such incredible pain he couldnt even walk. He was diagnosed with avascular necrosis which is a lack of blood supply to the bone. In the early stages of avascular necrosis, patients may not have any symptoms. The disease can progress in a matter of months or years until the patient experiences joint pain and eventually loss of function. For Frederick, the progression was fairly quick. By January 2003, he underwent hip replacement surgery on his right hip. In November 2003, he had the left hip replaced. The surgeries were successful and Frederick was back on the job after only four weeks following each surgery. He waited a couple months after the first surgery to return to his all-terrain vehicles, and plans to do the same after the second surgery. Frederick, who is engaged to be married, is just happy to continue his life as usual without pain. "Im just going to live life and ride my toys," he said. |
